You are standing in your living room with a tape measure, trying to work out whether the thing you want to buy will actually fit. The box says one number. A review you read said a bigger number. Your sofa is not moving.
How much space you need for a motion sensing game console depends on four things product pages rarely mention: how tall the players are, how many play at once, whether the games ask you to reach overhead, and how bright the room is. Square footage is half the answer.

The published numbers disagree with each other. Here is why.
The category leader, Nex Playground, publishes a spec that is easy to misread: roughly 6 ft × 6 ft of play area, players between 3 ft 4 in and 13 ft from the device, mounted 15 to 60 inches high.
Then you read the reviews. Android Police wanted 6 to 7 ft of clearance and still found "not enough room to fully capture players' feet or hands when reaching upwards, especially if adults play." Parade cleared a full 8 ft. Gaming Nexus ran it in a living room shallower than spec and reported tracking was "on point."
Nobody is lying. They are describing different rooms and different bodies.
Camera field of view. A wide-angle lens sees a cone, not a box, so the closer you stand the narrower the slice of you it captures. Step back a foot and you gain roughly a foot and a half of usable width.
Player height. A 45-inch seven-year-old fits inside a frame that crops a six-foot adult at the wrists. These specs were validated on children, so if grown-ups play, add a foot.
Player count. Two people side by side with arms out need 8 ft of width, not 6. Four need close to 10. Width nearly doubles; depth barely moves.
Game type. Punching forward in a rhythm game needs less room than a dance routine with lateral steps, and far less than reaching straight up. Overhead titles push 6 ft of depth to 8.

Measure your room in five minutes
You need a tape measure, painter's tape and a phone.
1. Mark the near line. Measure 3 ft 4 in out from the TV wall and tape it. Nobody plays closer. If your coffee table sits on that line, the table is the problem.
2. Mark the back line. Walk back until you hit the sofa or wall and tape that. The gap between the strips is your usable depth.
3. Measure width at the back line. Stand there, measure wall to wall, then subtract anything protruding: a sectional chaise, a floor lamp, a door swing.
4. Check overhead. Measure ceiling height, then the lowest thing hanging in the play zone: the fan blade, not the ceiling.
5. Run the phone test. Prop your phone where the console will sit, front camera on, framed at the play zone. Stand on the back tape, raise both arms overhead, then out into a T, then jump. If your hands, head or feet leave the frame, a camera there will crop you too. Step back a foot and repeat until you stay whole.
That step beats every published spec, because it measures your body.
How high should the console sit, and what about a TV above the fireplace?
Guidance in this category puts the camera 15 to 60 inches off the floor. A standard media unit lands mid-range, so nobody thinks about it.
Fireplace TVs break it. A mantel often sits at 55 to 65 inches with the screen above 70, and a camera looking down that steeply loses your feet first. Foot position is what dance and sports games score.
The fix is to separate the camera from the TV. The console reaches the display over one HDMI cable, so put it on a low side table or speaker stand beside the hearth at 30 to 40 inches, aimed down the play zone, and run a longer cable up to the set. Keep it centered on the players, not on the screen.

Will it work in a small apartment?
Usually yes, with three caveats that are not about square footage.
Depth is the constraint, not floor area. Apartment living rooms are often long and narrow, which is the right shape here. Clear 6 ft between TV and sofa and one player is fine. Move the coffee table to the hallway and you gain another 2 ft.
Downstairs neighbors are the real limit. Jumping travels through floors far better than voices do. On an upper floor, favor lateral and upper-body games, play before 9pm, and put down a dense mat. Three-quarter-inch rubber gym tiles kill most impact noise; thin foam does not.
Carpet is fine, thick pile is not. Tracking ignores flooring; ankles do not. Deep pile makes lateral steps grabby, and low pile is safer than bare hardwood, which is slippery in socks.

Basements, small TVs, sectionals and ceiling fans
Low basements. A 7 ft ceiling rules out adult jumping but works for kids and most sports and rhythm titles. The bigger basement problem is light, not height.
Small or older TVs. A 32-inch screen is hard to read from 8 ft back, so favor width over depth and stand closer.
Sectionals. The chaise arm is the most common hidden width thief here, eating 2 to 3 ft of play zone at hip height. Play at the other end of the room, or go solo.
Ceiling fans and pendant lights. Anything hanging below 7 ft 6 in gets raised, swapped or avoided. Not a tracking issue, a knuckles issue.
Lighting matters more than square footage
Android Police, testing a camera console at home, reported that "the light from the window also tampered with the Playground's motion tracking." Nex's own support docs warn about backlighting, overhead lights, busy-patterned clothing and clothing that matches the wall color. Every one of those is a contrast problem, not a space problem.
A camera tracking a body is looking for edges, and anything that flattens the difference between you and the background makes it work harder.
A big window behind the play area is the worst case, turning players into silhouettes on a bright afternoon. Close the blinds, or turn the setup 90 degrees so the window sits beside the play zone.
Downlights directly above the console wash the lens and drop hard shadows onto faces and feet. Light should come from behind the camera and fall on the players, which one lamp bounced off a wall achieves.
Dim evening rooms cause the subtler failure: the camera raises exposure, which adds motion blur, so fast movements smear. If tracking is flaky only at night, add light before blaming the hardware.
Clothing and spectators. A gray shirt against a gray wall is a real tracking problem, and so are stripes and busy patterns. A toddler wandering into frame reads as a player, so keep the near line clear.
